Prof. Geert Poels
Ghent University, Belgium
Geert Poels is a Senior Full Professor of Business Informatics at Ghent University, Belgium, and manager of the CVAMO core lab of Flanders Make at Ghent University. Flanders Make is a Research and Technology Organisation (RTO) that serves as the strategic research centre for industrial innovation in the Flanders region of Belgium. CVAMO unites ten professors of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEB) around common research interests regarding Business Engineering. These professors, together with their postdoctoral and PhD researchers, are investigating a wide array of topics in domains such as data analytics, value management, operations management and business informatics. The research ranges from basic research funded through the European Commission and the Flanders National Science Foundation to applied and contract research with manufacturing companies in the Flanders Make network.
Prof. Poels has an extensive international publication record, with over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including articles in high-impact international journals, referred conference proceedings, and edited volumes published by major publishers such as Springer, IEEE, Elsevier, and ACM. His scholarly work has received thousands of citations, demonstrating significant international visibility and scientific impact in the fields of software engineering, business informatics, and information systems.
His core research expertise includes Enterprise Modelling, Engineering, and Architecture (EMEA); Business Process Management (BPM); Requirements Engineering (RE); Ontology-Driven and Conceptual Modelling; IT Governance; and Privacy and Data Protection. In recent years, his research has increasingly focused on AI-supported Requirements Engineering, particularly the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for automated model generation, quality assurance, and ambiguity detection in user stories. He currently supervises doctoral research projects on NLP-based model generation from BDD scenarios and on ambiguity detection and resolution in agile software development, highlighting his active engagement in cutting-edge research.
In terms of international scientific recognition and service, Prof. Poels has held prominent leadership roles, including Program Committee Chair of CAiSE 2022 and Program Committee Chair of IEEE Conference on Business Informatics (CBI) 2022, both of which are internationally recognized flagship conferences in information systems engineering and business informatics. He is also the founding Program Chair of the FACETE Workshop, an established international scientific forum on enterprise and conceptual modeling.
Furthermore, Prof. Poels is a regular reviewer and editorial contributor for leading international journals, conferences, and edited volumes in software engineering, information systems, and enterprise modeling, contributing to the maintenance of international research quality standards. He is a member of the university-wide Committee for Scientific Research. Next to these roles at Ghent University, he is a program board member, lecturer and thesis supervisor in the Innocom Institute’s Master of Enterprise Architecture and Digital Transformation.
